ABD

The affable gentlemen of my QE committee in repose.

Well, it's over and done and I'm ABD.* There were no big surprises during my exam - Gopal dropped some zingers but I think I kept my head above water.** The whole thing lasted a bit over two hours and the committee was pleased with my responses.

When I got home I discovered that B had stitched me up THIS little guy:

Is he not the most adorable of weiner dogs named after existentialists?!

Now it's on to the next thing. But I'm not going to start worrying about that until tomorrow at the earliest.

*That means "All But Dissertation," for you non-academics. As in, once the dissertation is done, so is the PHD.
** But what did fascism mean?! Former historians who have moved on to cultural studies / political theory are very big on interrogating the epistemological status of movements in history. But that's why I like talking to them.

If this were an e-mail, I'd end with a smiley emoticon.

yay!!! Congratulations! I doubt anyone expected less of you. :) That's wonderful, and I'm sure a relief to have it over with.

Nicely done. May the sources rise up to meet you and the wind always stay out of your notes. This is a big deal and I know you'll celebrate accordingly. I love the photo of your QE committee. Cracks me up. The new generation meets the old.

Congrats and well deserved! One more hoop down and you can move a bit farther from the Wheel of Pain that is the accursed lower level Grad school busy work. Now you get to move toward a more substantial project of greater personal interest. I wish I was in your shoes- my ancient languages requirements and 3 moderns on top of history and classics might prohibit from advancing to candidacy until the 2010 schedule they have me on. I'm trying for sooner, but it is shaky. It is the downside to what I study, but at least I get my excavations til then. Therefore, I stay pushing the wheel in endless circles for the foreseeable future. Well done on your part to break partially free to do battle at the next level!

Congratulations! Wish I could buy you a pint. Well, I mean, I can. And I will. But tonight's awkward.

But seriously, that's awesome, and I'm excited for you and your execution of the getting done of Large Things.

Awesome! Congrats. Nice picture of the committee, otherwise known as the people who ask complicated intellectual/philosophical questions I seldom have the attention span to understand. (I think I'll stick to my own field.)

I love the weiner dog! Tell B she did a awesome job too. =D

Congratulations (a bit late!)! No surprise that you rocked them, but how fantastic is that feeling when they're finally over and through and you can just say "ABD" when people ask about your student status. Rather than some mumbly, "second year, I mean fourth-year, you know, studying for my exams, um, grad student and stuff." ABD. Welcome to the club!
