Nous Allons

The academic year has begun. We did our best to welcome it in classic SC history grad fashion: we drank all day and I got progressively louder. Sorry about that to everyone who was there at the bar last night.

I just re-read the comments on my essay produced for the cultural studies course I took Spring term, courtesy of this guy. They were harsh, but accurate. Like all lifelong Good Students (tm), it's hard for me to take tough criticism. It makes me feel sheepish and embarrassed, like I shouldn't have even produced the thing that got criticized because I clearly didn't know what I was doing. That is clearly not going to fly any longer. There are so many difficult things I have to do in the next few years, and crafting essays that can take some punishment (or, more to the point, developing the ability to take some punishment myself) is on the list.

Whew. Hangover almost gone now. That's a relief.

You were rather entertaining, to say the least. ;-)

Ahhh... criticism. At least you didn't have the design prof who remarked to a student about their piece, "If you didn't put crap up here, I wouldn't call it crap."

yeah... harsh.

Yikes. I just had a crazy famous theorist tell me I need to be more Gramscian. Maybe in SC, need to be more Gramscian is the equivalent of "your work is crap," actually...

I had my first batch of harsh criticism per that poli sci class I took in the winter quarter. I believe the (unfortunately most accurate) critique was simply "logic leaps" followed half way through the paper with another comment "good, you are not just making assumptions here. this is what is missing in the first half of the paper." That hurt a bit, but I can't say it isn't true... I guess I shouldn't have written the paper in three days.

Ugh... you don't realize how spoiled you are living there. I mean, it has its downs too (I imagine you are and have been dealing with them all summer) but at least the ups are possible and occur some of the time.

My biggest accomplishment today was finding imported butter at Carrefour so I can make a cake that tastes good in the oven I got last week. Oh, and I found ground coffee at the store too so now I can save some bucks on buying it every day on campus.
